His Dark Materials

Some of the work done at Painting Practice on His Dark Materials when the production was still at Twickenham Studios in May 2018.
I spent around a month working on the bear doing a back and forth between the production designer Joel Collins and the VFX Supervisor Dan May. In the end, the armour changed on screen but I still like the initial direction and funny enough you can see it in the few Previs clips Painting Practice released on their website.
I took so much pleasure from working on this, trying to figure out how intricate the armour was turned out to be very challenging and such a massive learning experience. I got to learn tools in Zbrush I had never used before that time.
On top of that I got to study polar bears in depth; how they move, fight, stand, how their fur looks, their skin colour (some degree of black by the way). Did you know they are classified as marine mammals? I didn't at that time but thanks to this project I got to learn this and more.

A still like this image after quite a few years, which is rare XD

Neck piece details. Together with helmet, this is the other image I like the most.

Iorek

Iorek

I had spare time back then and I was asked to replace the Iorek and see what Iofur would look like in a similar setting.

One of the many 3d mockups showing how the several pieces of the armour might look all together on the bear body. The idea was the armour wasn't perfect hence the disconnected pieces on the face.

A selection of sketches. I produced quite a few showing how he could protect himself from bullets, run, jump and so on... Loved it!
